Relax, I've Got This
One of the things I love most about being a Wedding Host isn’t making announcements or performing magic.
It’s solving problems before the couple even know they exist.
A few weeks ago, I was working with Mark and Oana. We’d spent time beforehand discussing their plans, their vision for the day, what would work well, what might need tweaking, and who was responsible for what.
The plan was beautiful.
A summer wedding in the local church, followed by a celebration in a marquee in the vicarage garden.
Then it rained.
Of course, we had a wet-weather plan. Every wedding should. But as the saying goes, no plan survives first contact with reality.
Suddenly the bar needed moving.
The band needed more space and access to power.
The coffee stand needed relocating.
The magic mirror needed somewhere to go.
The suppliers needed working space.
The best man wanted a stand for a game he’d planned during his speech.
The cutlery hadn’t all been laid out, and much of it needed polishing.
The table plan kept falling off its easel.
And those were just the issues before the guests had even sat down.
The difference wasn’t that problems happened.
Problems happen at every wedding.
The difference was that Mark and Oana didn’t have to deal with them.
While they spent the day celebrating with family and friends, everything was quietly handled in the background. Decisions were made. Suppliers coordinated. Problems solved.
In many cases, they never even knew there had been a problem.
Because that’s the real job.
When acting as the wedding host my role is simple:
Look after the couple.
Look after the guests.
Look after the suppliers.
Create an environment where everyone can relax, have fun, and enjoy the day.
A great wedding isn’t one where nothing goes wrong.
It’s one where the happy couple never have to worry about it.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
