Sometimes Truth Hurts When I was a new magician trying to get started, I'd often see posts from more established performers offering advice on how to choose a magician. Things like: "Look for a good number of photographs. Do they all look like they're from the same event, or from lots of different events?" "Check the reviews. How many are there? More importantly, what do they actually say?" "Do they have video? Does it show real performances at different events, and does it give you a genuine feel for how they interact with people?" Every time I read those posts, I winced. Because they were absolutely right. The problem was... I didn't have those things. I had very few photos. Hardly any reviews. Very little video. At the time, those posts felt like the established magicians were pulling the ladder up behind them. Looking back, I realise they weren't. They were giving genuinely good advice. Fast forward a few years and things have changed. I've now got hundreds of reviews, plenty of photographs from real events, and videos showing me performing for real people rather than friends pretending to be amazed in the kitchen. And here's the slightly uncomfortable bit... I now give exactly the same advice. Because if you're investing in entertainment for your wedding, corporate event or party, you deserve to know what you're getting. So yes... I hated that advice when I started. Turns out it was true.
